Art rooms at the Andaz Liverpool St Hotel London

Night night, sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite… Well, you won’t find any of those in your bedroom at the Andaz Liverpool Street Hotel where the first of a year-long series of East London-inspired art rooms has just been unveiled.

Artist Chris Price and his cockney wife and partner-in-paint Delisia Howard have created a striking black and white Edwardian East End street scene in one of Andaz’s Large King guest rooms that is now called ‘The Pearly Room’. It’s the first of four artist collaborations at the Andaz Liverpool Street Hotel in East London.

They’ve painted a handsome pearly king and his winsome queen either side of Hawksmoor’s Christ Church, Spitalfields, which you can just see for real if you crane your neck out of the window of ‘The Pearly Room’.

Their London streets are not paved with gold, but strewn with buttons. Legend has it that in the 1880s a Japanese ship ran aground in the Thames and its cargo of millions of pearl buttons was washed overboard. Salvaged by the ‘mudlarks’ who scavenged the banks of the Thames at low tide looking for ‘treasure’, they made a great embellishment to the tatty black suits of the East End wide boys, barrow boys and costermongers.

Chris has also fitted in the nearby Wiltons Music Hall, the oldest surviving music hall in the world which is still going strong and well worth a visit.

While you’re there bounce on your bed in some snazzy Alice & Co jim-jams In wholesome cotton stripes or slinky silk. Click here to ask Alice about getting some made.

  1. Alice, thank you for my lovely bright green Macintosh. Actually quite useful today! Inspired by your blog for a few new pieces and I am thinking of including a purple pair of your wonderful relaxed trousers. Not sure I should tell everyone otherwise they will not be so exclusive. Gail
